GI Bill BAH: How the Monthly Housing Allowance Works

The Post-9/11 GI Bill includes a monthly housing stipend that many veterans call GI Bill BAH. It is calculated from real BAH tables, but the rules are its own. Here is how it works.

The GI Bill monthly housing allowance equals the E-5 with-dependents BAH rate for the ZIP code of your school, prorated by your enrollment level. You must be enrolled more than half time to receive it, and active-duty members generally do not receive it while on active duty.

What it actually is

The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays tuition, a books stipend, and a Monthly Housing Allowance, usually shortened to MHA. Veterans call it GI Bill BAH because the dollar amount comes straight out of the BAH tables: it equals the E-5 with-dependents BAH rate for the ZIP code of the school you attend. Same tables, same local pricing, different program.

That link to the E-5 with-dependents rate is fixed. It does not matter whether you separated as an E-4 or an O-3; the housing stipend uses the E-5 with-dependents number for your school's location.

The two gates: enrollment and status

First gate: you must be enrolled more than half time. Half time or less means no housing allowance at all, no matter the school or the ZIP code. Above half time, the payment is prorated by your rate of pursuit.

Second gate: you cannot be on active duty. Active-duty members using transferred or earned Post-9/11 benefits generally do not receive the housing stipend while serving, because active-duty BAH already covers housing. Spouses using transferred benefits while the member is on active duty are also excluded; children using transferred benefits can receive it.

Worked example: the proration math

Suppose your school sits in the San Diego military housing area, where the 2026 E-5 with-dependents BAH rate is $3,975 a month. Enrolled full time, your housing allowance is the full $3,975. Enrolled three-quarter time, multiply by 0.75: 3,975 times 0.75 equals $2,981.25 a month. Just over half time, say 60 percent, pays 0.60 times 3,975, which is $2,385 a month.

Note the cliff at the bottom: at exactly half time the payment is zero, while at 51 percent it is roughly half the full rate. If you are deciding between a half-time and a fuller schedule, that threshold is the most expensive line in the program.

Online-only students get a different number

If every course is online, you do not get the school's ZIP-code rate. Instead you receive half of the national average BAH rate. This is a frequent surprise for veterans who picked a school for its high-cost ZIP code and then enrolled fully online. One in-person or hybrid class can change which rule applies, so check with the school's certifying official before you register.

Estimate your number

The housing stipend is always the E-5 with-dependents rate, so you can estimate it by looking up that exact figure for a school's area. The free BAH calculator includes the official 2026 tables: select E-5, check dependents, pick the closest location, and you have the full-time baseline. Then apply your enrollment fraction to get your actual payment.

Get your exact number in seconds. Pick your pay grade, dependency status, and location and the calculator looks up your official 2026 rate.

GI Bill housing allowance: common questions

What is the GI Bill housing allowance?

It is the Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) paid under the Post-9/11 GI Bill: a monthly stipend for housing while you are enrolled in school, set to the E-5 with-dependents BAH rate for the ZIP code where your school is located.

How is GI Bill BAH calculated?

Take the E-5 with-dependents BAH rate for your school's ZIP code, then multiply by your rate of pursuit. A student enrolled three-quarter time receives 75 percent of the full rate. You must be enrolled more than half time to receive anything.

Do you get BAH while using the GI Bill on active duty?

Generally no. Active-duty service members using the Post-9/11 GI Bill do not receive the monthly housing allowance while on active duty, because they already draw BAH. The housing stipend is aimed at veterans and separated members.

How much is the GI Bill housing allowance for online school?

Students taking all courses online receive a reduced rate equal to half of the national average BAH rate, rather than the rate for any specific ZIP code. Mixing in at least one in-person class can qualify you for the school's local rate, subject to the usual rules.

Does the GI Bill pay housing during school breaks?

The allowance is paid for the days you are enrolled. Between-term breaks are generally not paid unless you remain enrolled across the break under the program's interval rules, so plan for gaps in longer breaks.
